arrived today from Ken Bromley Art Supplies in the UK. I had considered upgrading a few of the half pans in my W&N Compact Set but, actually, that would have been more expensive than buying this set of Cotman 45 half-pans including shipping from the UK. Go figure. So, the question was, do I have a collection of small palettes or just one large one? Watercolor purists, gurus, and aficionados will say all these pans are not necessary and counter intuitive as all and any color can be mixed from your basic primaries. Since I am transitioning from acrylics to watercolors, I felt this assortment of convenience colors would be more advantageous for me. The 45 half pan set also included some colors I wanted but were not in the Compact Set: Payne's Grey, Cobalt, Hookers Green, Van Dyke Brown, to name a few. I'll use these and upgrade to the Artists' pans as needed.
NOTE: The set is missing Cerulean Blue which is part of the Cotman Series of 40 colors. Instead, there are two half pans each of Ultramarine and Prussian. I contacted Ken Bromley today (05.24.10) via their live online help link and they are sending me the missing half pan of Cerulean - gratis, of course.
